Best Calgary Location for Family Photos: Bowness Park
Some of my favourite family sessions are the ones that don’t feel much like a photoshoot at all! I spent a beautiful September morning with an amazing mom and son as we wandered through Bowness Park in Calgary, Alberta. It was a beautiful fall afternoon walking around the park, letting her little one explore and taking photos along the way. My goal is to always ensure clients don’t feel any pressure to stand perfectly still and smile, I encourage lots of natural movement and connection with their family!
Why Bowness Park is such a beautiful place for family photos
Bowness Park is one of my favourite locations for family and maternity photography in Calgary because it gives us so much variety while still feeling relaxed and natural.
Bowness Park has so many little pockets that work beautifully for family sessions. There are open grassy areas, large trees, pathways, parks, water, and plenty of space for kids to move around without feeling like they have to stay in one spot. Locations like this gives tons of ways for families to interact with each other. That movement often leads to some of my favourite images, such as little hands reaching for mom or dad, cuddles, big laughs, and all of the little interactions that happen when everyone starts to forget there is a camera there.
What a relaxed family session can look like
A family session might involve walking hand in hand, sitting together in the grass, picking up your little one, playing a game, snuggling close, or simply exploring the park together. There is usually a mix of more traditional family portraits and candid photographs throughout the session. I love having both. It’s nice to have the photograph where everyone is together and looking toward the camera, but I also think some of the images that become most meaningful are the ones that capture those candid moments between your family.
Choosing the right location for your Calgary family photos
The best location isn’t necessarily the most impressive one. It’s somewhere that allows your family to feel comfortable and speaks to who you are. Bowness Park is a great option for families who love greenery, open space, and a more laid-back feel. It can work beautifully for babies, toddlers, older children, maternity sessions, and families who simply want updated photographs together. The park also changes throughout the seasons, which gives each session a different feel.
