Baby's First Halloween | A Fall Afternoon at Confederation Park

There's something extra special about experiencing all the seasons for the first time with your baby, and their first Halloween is no exception!

A few of my mom friends decided to get together for a Halloween-inspired photoshoot at Confederation Park in Calgary. The afternoon was beautiful! Gorgeous weather and the leaves were everywhere, and we had a few very cute little pumpkins to photograph.

And yes, we put our babies inside actual pumpkins.

Little pumpkins and fall leaves

Confederation Park is a beautiful spot in Calgary during the fall. With the changing leaves, pathways, and plenty of open space, it made the perfect backdrop for our afternoon together.

We spent our time hanging out in the leaves, taking photos of the babies, and attempting to get everyone to look at the camera at the same time (which, as you can imagine, is easier said than done).

One of my favourite things about photographing babies is that you never quite know what you're going to get. From curious little expressions to big smiles and everything in between, it's often the unplanned moments that end up being my favourites.

How to take your own baby-in-a-pumpkin photos

If you've seen those adorable photos of babies sitting inside pumpkins and wondered how people do it, it's actually a pretty simple DIY project!

Here are a few tips if you're hoping to recreate the look for your own baby's first Halloween:

  1. Choose a large, sturdy pumpkin. Look for one with a wide base that sits flat on the ground, with enough room for your baby to fit comfortably.

  2. Carve and clean it ahead of time. Cut a wide opening at the top, scoop out the seeds and pulp, and give the pumpkin time to dry.

  3. Make it comfortable. Smooth any rough edges and line the inside with a clean, dry towel to keep your baby away from the cold, damp surface.

  4. Keep it short and sweet. Have your camera ready before bringing your baby over, and make sure they're warm, comfortable, and happy.

  5. Safety comes first. I recommend only attempting a seated pumpkin photo if your baby can comfortably maintain their position, with an adult supporting them at all times.

Celebrating all the little firsts

Since becoming a mom myself, I've found myself wanting to document all of these little experiences even more. The first holidays, the changing seasons, and the afternoons spent with friends and our babies.

I know our little ones won't remember an afternoon sitting in pumpkins at Confederation Park, but one day they'll have these photos to look back on. And we'll get to remember just how little they once were.

If you're looking to document your own baby's milestones, motherhood, or the season your family is in, I'd love to photograph it! :)
